China cracks down on illegal gambling
By Paul
Police in Guangdong have hailed their latest operation as a breakthrough in the fight against illegal gambling. As reported in the China Daily, Guangdong police have smashed 1,644 secret Mark Six lottery gambling bases in the past two months, detaining 1,417 suspects from 462 gangs. Mark Six is illegal on the Chinese mainland, although legal in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

A total of 4,852 gambling cases have been detected since the crackdown began, including Mark Six, illegal football betting rings and gambling on Hong Kong's horse racing by Guangdong residents. Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Public Security established a special task force last November to deal with illegal gambling.
