|A number of guests from the online gaming world gathered in London on Wednesday 25th January to celebrate the 10th birthday of Intertops.com, the world’s first online sports betting company.|
In 1994, as the internet was still in its infancy, Head of Technical Ian Sherington discussed the topic of Sports Betting Online with founder Detlef Train. Investigations followed and they found that 30 million people already had access to the internet. This was the magic number for Detlef Train.
Detlef Train founder of Intertops.com said, “We had no experience and nobody to learn from back then. Everything had to be developed and invented, Payment Gateways, Credit Card processing – Everything!”
“It didn’t take long though as within little more than a year we had found a way. Even today in an age of off the shelf turnkey solutions this is a very short period of time to turn an idea into reality.”
Quite appropriately, special guest at the 10th anniversary celebration was Finnish enthusiast Jukka Honkavaara who, on 17 January 1996, placed the first interactive online bet ever: a US$50 bet on the outcome of a soccer match between UK teams Tottenham Hotspur and Hereford United – picking up a whopping US$52 in winnings as a result!
Intertops.com is now a multi-million dollar operation handling over 1,000 online betting transactions daily and allowing sports fans to wager as much as they wish, whenever they wish – on whatever sporting opportunity!
Michl Posch, Head of Marketing Intertops.com said: “2006 may be our tenth anniversary, but it is just the beginning of a truly exciting future for the company and for the online gaming industry as a whole.'
